KEEP-IT-DARK.

The shaft to the winding gear, which for some time has been shaky, and which had been {receiving all possible repairs and attention gave way altogether oo Tuesday, and the works in the low level had to be stopped in consequence. Had this mishap not occurred, the contractors would have finished tbeir distance during the week, having now driven all but 10 feet of the stipulated length. To provide for the emergency whioh has now occurred the directors telegraphed all over the colonies for a steel shaft to re_ place that in use hitherto, but were unable to procure'one of the description, which, it was thought, would withstand the heavy strain which has already broken two or three shafts" of the ordinary kind. Under these circumstances nothing remained but tbe necessity of mak ing tbe best of adverse circumstances, and the original shaft, which had been thrown away, after first breaking was again examined and welded together. Experts pronounce that tbe work has been done in such a manner aa to great credit upon Mr Liodstrom, tbe blacksmith to the company. Some difficulty has been experienced in removing the broken shaft from tbe dram, bat in a day or two it is hoped everything will again be Jin work* ing order.
