BOATMAN'S.

EUREKA. This company* not satisfied with previous surveys have lately had a very extensive survey made with a view to find out the exact position of the Welcome reef, its bearings, and extension, to enable j the company to pick it up in their own claim. which is adjoining tbe Welcome Company's ground on the north. The survey is now completed, and a very elaborate plan is prepared of tbe whole course of tbe reef bringing it in at tbe S. W. corner of the Eureka claim, and ex* tending thence towards tbe B.E. corner of tbe Homeward Bound Company's ground. Owing to the configuration of the conn* try the desired spot can only be reached either by one of tbe two projected amalgamated low level tunnels in a distance of 2619 or 3633 ft from the separate starting points or else by an incline shaft 24° 17' from the horizontal starting from below the Welcome Company's No. 3 level tunnel in the Alexandra ground, passing diagonally through the Hopeful and Cleopatra ground, and reaching tbe reef iv a distance of 1630 feet at a point above mentioned, bat a considerable distance below the present No 6 Welcome level. This would give 95 feet backs of reef, which could be easily wrought from the proposed shaft if constructed. No final decision has as yet been arrived at as to the advisability of adopting the incline shaft scheme or not, but as it seems feasible, although very expensive, pera haps it will eventually be carried out. This is one of the numerous instances in this field, where tbe advantages of dia-

mond drills and rockborers would he incalculable, and it is sincerely to be hoped that the drill company, now in course of formation for introducing these modern appliances, will meet such public support as the importance of the under* taking deserves.
