•;,/ Dunkdin, 15. At'tb'4 Supre^fe Cot-c yesterday the action M'Lood v. Reeves, claim for £2COO for malicious prosecution, was tried. The circumstances which led to the action out of a scene at the close of the Dnnedin Exhibition, when some wine was taken, and by the authority of the Committee M'Leod was prosecuted for larceny, The result of the trial was a nonsuit on the ground that plaintiff bas not proved that there was insufficient cause for the original prosecution. Bush fires around Dunedin yesterday did considerable damage ; one started at Broad Bay and spread with surprising rapidity, causing bushmen to fly for their lives; two cottages were burnt; Larnach loses over cne thousand cords of cut firewood. . ItfvEBOARGILL. 14. Finn, well-known barrister, will contest Hokonui in the Liberal interest. As showing the interest taken in the contest for this seat, it may be mentioned that j one gentlemen recently forwarded fo the Registrar of electors between 400 and 600 claims for enrolment, the bulk of them being obtained from the north east* crn part of the electorate. Shanks, who has hitherto been re« gard«>d as doubtful, is now definitely out for Mataura. Chkistchubch, 15. John Holmes, a candidate for south Christchurch, and Henry Toomer, who is standing for Stanmore, addressed the electors last night, and each received a vote of thanks. Dixon is announced as an additional candidate for Ashler GI?B~>UNE, 15. Gannon will contest the Gisborne seat. Punedjn, 16. James Seaton is a candidate for tbe Peninsula. John Graham addressed the electors of the central ward last night. Wellington. 15. A telegratn from the West Coast to* day indicates the probability that in view of impending event? some of Te Whiti's followers do not relish their own position in tho matter, and are not unlikely to secede from, him ; they have been beard to grumble that he is * making sieves ' of them, and comp'ain that unless he can speedily bring about restoration of tbe land, they run the risk of being left out in the cold, and losing their share in the proposed reserves. The next monthly Parihnta meeting, which will he. held on the 17th instant, is being looked forward to with keen in* crest. The electioneering campaign has now fairly commenced here, the first two nvetings being held last night. No loss than four lawyers are candidates for tho city electorates.
The following official announcement was made yesterday through the press : — Mr Olliver has accepted a seat in the Cabinet, without portfolio, and ii (o be appointed to the Legislative Council. To* night's I'ost in a leading article suggests the senior member for this city William Hart Levin, as a suitable candi» date for the vacant portfolio ; his ability and character are recognised on all hands, and the appointment would probably giye great satisfaction.
