At 11 o'clock thw forenoon, the Government received tlie following from Mr Bryce : — " Arrived at Parihaka at 9 a.m. — found the Maori enclosure cram* raed with Natives. Mr Bqller was directed to demand from Te Whifi a reply to the proclamation. Te Whiti did not reply at 9 30. The Riot Act was read, and one hoar had to be allowed to lapse according to law. The " maeri " will then be surrounded. Hiroki is there. The Natives dressed in holiday fashion to offer other than passive resistance. Te Whiti (old the Natives to sit close, and be stout-hearted." . Pungabehu, Nov. 5 (11.30 a.m.) Te Whiti, Tohu, and Jffiroki, were arrested without resistance. Later, The entrance to Parihaka was nmfe about 9 o'clock ; the troops which num« bered 1700 wpre made up in the following wjiy : \. Cs. as n^vance guard with Nelsnn and Thames Volunteers on ihe left, flink, under Mtyv Pitt ; Canterbury and Marlborouch Volunteers on the right, and the Wellington and Thames Navals in the centre. At II o'clock the triops closed rmnd the marae, or meet* icg house,, where Te Whiti generally held forth, and where the natives were nil cojgregated. This being done Mnjor Tulfe after an inferral of ten minutes marched up and arrested Te Whiti, who gave himself up without any resistance ; Tohn was arrested soon after, and still later Horoki, the alleged murderer of M'Lean, a cook in the Government su^ vey party on Waimato Plains ia 1879. Te Whilj and Tohu are being sent to New Plymouth in charge of a strong escort. Dfnedin, November 5 C S. Reeves is a candidate for Dunedin East. A private telegram says that Sweetmeat walked over for the Royal Park St»kes. There has been a stir in Reefton mining stocks in Dunediti during the last few day9, espeo'ally in Keep*it»Darks, shares in which have gone up from 18s to 35s ; a coal merchant who held shares \s said to hare netted £3000 by the rise.
