DEATHS OF NOTED SCOTCHMEN.
' ~E John Duncan, ' the Alford botanist.' died at that place oo 12th of August, aged 86. He was a weaver, and by dint of much industry made a valuable collection of Scottish grasses &c, which be presented last December to the University of Aberdeen. Some months ago several hundred pounds were raised by pubiio subscription to relieve the rigors of poverty in bis advanced age. The Rev, Alexander Stark, of Tigna* bruaich, the ' father of the free Church, died on August 12 h, in tbe 96th year of his age, and the 74th of his ministry. Mr James Black, senior partner of the firm owing the Anchor Thread Mills, Paisley, died on August 3rd. aged 59 years his death oeing accelerated by the disease of his daughter a fortnight before. Mr Clark was greatly respected in Paisley where bis family have been engaged in the manufacture of thread since 1720. The firm now employs nearly 400 hands, ■_-_------M----------»
