♦ (PROM OOR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Christchurcii, January 1. Shortly after midnight two fires occurred, one at the Union Bank, and the other at Reese's timber yard. The origin of both is a mystery. They were extinguished about an hour after the engines got to work, but broke out again between 2 and 3 o'clock, and great trouble was experienced in finally extinguishing it. The business portion of the bank's premises was completely gutted. It is believed that the ,fire occurred in the chief officer's room. Tlie fire at Reese's occurred about the centre of the premises, where fires are never used. Six horses were saved with great difficulty. Insured in the New Zealand office for L 2750. The damage is estimated at L 2,000. A man named J. Kakelton while riding to Leeston, suddenly fell from his horse, fractured his skull, and has subsequently died. The medical evidence showed that deceased had a fit, which caused the accident. There was a smart shock of earthquake here at 6 30 this morning. J. W. Treadwell, one candidate at the recent election for Christchurch South has laid a criminal information for libel against the Telegraph newspaper. Ashburton, Jannary 6. Joseph Ivess has lodged a petition against the return of Wason for Wakanui. Dunedin, January 6. At the Supreme Court Ann Bryro Schade and Thomas Byron, her son, were charged with shooting with intent at John Thomas Thornton. The facts of the case were peculiar. The prosecutor works on a station near Cromwell, and on the 17th of November he got his cheque and proceeded to the Mount Pisa Hotel, kept by the female prisoner. He remained drinking till midnight, and was then pushed out of the house. He endeavored to gain readmission, when Mrs Shade called to her son to fire with the gun at him through the pannel of the door, which he had broken. The son did so, and the shot entered Thornton's leg. For the defence it was alleged that Thornton had made improper proposals to Mrs Shade, which led to his being turned out, and that he had attempted to enter her bed-room by the window. After retirement the jury found the son guilty of shooting with intent, and the mother of aiding and abetting him. A sentence of two months, with hard labor was passed upon each. Auckland, January 7. A sculling match has boon arranged between Albert White and Carter, of Sydney, to row at Mercury Bay, for L."io a-side, changing boats. This match arises out of a sculling race at Mercury Bay regatta. White thinking that Carter won by the superiority of his boat. Wellington, January 7.

Pharazyn, for alleged personation, will be heard before the Chief Justice. j in the Supreme Court, on Thursday. | The charge of overcrowding the ex ' cursion steamer Manawatu, on Monday last, in Wellington harbor, was heard in the Magistrate's Court to-day, but dismissed, owing to insufficient proof of the actual number on board being offered. In the action — Fisher, Mayor of Wellington v. Stewart, leading timber merchant, for LI,OOO damages, for slander, the trial set down for hearing on Tuesday next, in the Supreme Court, has been withdrawn, Napier, January 6. The following verdict was returned by the jury at the inquest on the fire at Blackburn's rope factory : — " The jury are of opinion that Blackburn's shed was set on fire from the inside, but as to who the person or persons were who originated the fire there is no evidence to show ; but the jury wish to add that the evidence also shows that the property was over-insured, and that Blackburn fraudulently misrepresented the value of his property. The - jury think that the insurance companies are to blame for accepting the risk without first sun r eying the property."
