(from our own correspondents.) Wellington, February 2, The Wellington Cup was run to-day, and won by Bate's Hilda, Salvage second and The Poet third. Won by half a head on the judge's decision. Owing to the recent decision under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, sweeps of every description were abolished, except in a most surreptitious manner, though both totalisatora did a good business. Ashburton, February 1. In the Magistrate's Court to-day James Fowler was charged on remand with the abduction of Lucy Swan, 15 years of age. Defendant promised to marry the girl, and was remanded for eight days. Dune din, February 1. Three cakes of gold came down from the Macetown reefs by escort last night. That from the Maryborough claim weighs 7200zs ; that from the Tipperary 501 ozs., and that from ths Homeward Round, 2320z5. Christchttrch, February 1. The cost of the scheme proposed by Messrs Siemens and Co. for lighting Lyttelton Harbor with electricity is L 3522 for 22 lights, with a total candl power of 35,700. It would alao cost L 4, per month for an engineer to set up the plant, besides his passage money.
