FIERY CROSS.
Sixty feet or nearly one-half of the distance of the cross-cut from the foot of the shaft to the line of reef is now reached. Good headway is being made as the country is passable driving and does not require timbering. The manager has been prospecting in a direction north from the late workings in the low level, and has discovered some gold-bearing stone overhead, where a small run of stone had formerly been cut and then lost. By rising from this point quartz was again met with, and should this continue as appearances would indicate, a very important find has been made which may lead for some distance upwards on quite a new line of reef. The situation of the discovery is about the centre of the old Alexandra ground, and about 300 feet from its northern boundary. Should the stone continue a trial crushing will be taken out.
