DEVIL'S CREEK.
GOLDEN POINT. During the working time of last month a great deal of prospecting has been done in this ground, the principal feature being the driving of a tunnel 50 feet near the Royal boundary. At this place Mr Perotti found gold-bearing quartz, and other strong indications of a reef just before Christmas, and on resuming work after the holidays the above-mentioned tunnel was started on the sideling and across country. Singular to relate goldbearing veins have been cut nearly throughout the whole length of the drive. They have been of regular occurrence and of various sizes, from a few inches to a foot or two, more or less gold-bearing, alternating with well-defined slate rock, the whole having a gridiron appearance. For the last six feet no quartz has been met with, and should no more appear in another days' driving, it is intended to take in another drive at a lower level to ascertain the formation at a greater depth. Should these leaders form into a solid lode as anticipated with *t»ne of similar quality to that found above, the discovery would be of incalculable value. The contractors for extending the main level are continuing the work past the contract distance, and the driving is easier. The sinking of the winze has been somewhat retarded owing to foul air, but the shaft has now been timbered up and centered, and better progress will follow. The castings for the ten-head battery are nearly finished at the Despatch Foundry, Greymouth, and the race which is to supply motive power is making satisfactory headway.
