NIL DESPERANDUM.

After repairing and timbering portions of the mine which required attention, a commencement was made at the winze, which it was decided to sink from the bottom level. The spot selected for this purpose is about 250 feet to the north of the foot of the present winding shaft, and is immediately below the winze in Nos. 3 and 4 levels, bo that the winze under notice can be considered a continuation of those above. It was at first intended ta - s_k this' by contract, 'and tenders «?ei*e"i accordingly called for the work, but as the prices demanded were considered too high it will now be done by wages hands. Ten feet is now sunk on a good solid body of stone carrying a fairly payable percentage of gold. As far as can be ascertained the lode is from 6 to 8 feet thick, but as the hanging-wall is not yet reached it might be more. This work has been undertaken not so much with a view to permanency, as the working of the lode with present winding appliances would entail a great amount of labor and expense, but merely as a means of prospecting and testing the mine at greater depth, to work which to advantage will ultimately necessitate the sinking of a main shaft.
