DEVIL'S CREEK.

GOLDEN HOPE. After the recent finds in the Golden Point Company's ground had attracted attention to this portion of our vast field, a number of leases were taken up in this vicinity, amongst the number the claim now called the Golden Hope. It appears that some fourteen years ago, when the bottom of Darkies Gully was worked for alluvial, a small leader of quartz was exposed to view which on a casual inspection was seen to be gold-bearing. Some good specimens were broken off, but nothing more was thought of the discovery at the time, and the place has since then for years been filling up with debris from the adjacent alluvial workings. But when the excitement, caused by quartz discoveries in the neighbourhood, was on, the old discovery was remembered, and the ground pegged out and applied for. No time was lost in trying the ground, and men were at once put on to find the leader. A shaft was sunk as near the spot as memory served, and after it had rerched a sufficient depth to clear the old workings, driving was commenced to intercept the probable run of the leader. At the same time some prospecting was done higher up, and surface stone with was selected, and^re is' now intended to sink on some stone, which appears near the surface, and which contains payable gold. The quartz looks similar to that obtained in the Golden Point, and as the run of stone trends in the direction of that mine, great hopes are entertained of success which, if accomplished, will add considerable value to the Devil's Creek district, as the present is as yet the only spot on that side of the Darkies Gully, where gold-bearing quartz has been found. As an instance of the high opinion in which the ground is held, it may be mentioned that the men engaged on this claim are willing to take shares in the venture, as an equivalent for their labor.
