NIL DESPERANDUM.
The winze is now down 15 feet, but small progress has been made at sinking during the week, owing to the very hard and solid nature of the quartz, which is being pierced. This, however, carries a very good show of coarse gold not only to be seen in the clusters and streaks of pyrities but also fairly . distributed the stone itself, which on' being broken discloses,' in many places projecting particles of 'gold, demonstrating the highly satisfactory condition of the gold being embedded in the solid stone, as contra distinguished from the so-called seam gold, which is observed in cleavages of the rock, and is frequently met with, but which is not considered a satisfactory sign of permanency. VENUS. The contractors, aftor having had some
very hard and difficult country to penetrate, have for the last few weeks had a favourable; change, and the work has in consequence progressed at a moro satisfactory rate. Only eight feet remains to complete the 250-feet contract. Signs of quartz country are also setting in, and although it i 3 not expected to cut the reef within the contract distance, yet it is hoped that no great amount of driving will,be required jto obtain the run of stone traced in the upper level.
