Perth, March 29,
A destructive hurricane swept over the north-western part of the colony completely destroying the town of Roebourne, the chief site for pearl fisheries, and Port Cossack, eight miles off. Three lives have been lost by the disaster. Melbourne, March 29. Bryant, the "Age" informant re Russian designs on the Colonies is identified as a French refugee from Jfew Caledonia. His real name is DeBeaumout, and he was recently discharged from Pentridge.
Sydney, March 30.
The schooner Premedowne has been totally wrecked a few miles south of Sydney. Five of the crew perished but the captain was saved.
Dunedin, March 30. The report that there is a vessel on fire off the coast proves unfounded,
Christchurch March 30.
Goods for the Exhibition are pourin rapidly, and (ftrite an army of men are preparing the necessary stands.
Patea. March 30.
A widow named Mary O'Sullivan has been committed for trial on a charge of murdering her illegitimate child by strangulation.
Nelson, March 30.
John Dermott, an old West Coaster, brother of the late Dr. Dermott, was found dead in bed at the Custom House Hotel. It is supposed from heart disease and asthma combined.
Hokitika, March 28.
Another claim has been bottomed seven claims away from the prospectors with ten grains from four dishes.
The number of inmates in the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum at the end of the year was 622, of whom 478 were incurables and 120 blind. The total number of cases relieved was 747. The average number of inmates was 621, and the cost per head £12 6s id.
