MEETING OF THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
. ■ -* — - A special meeting of the County Council was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present, the Chairman, Messrs Williams, Byrne, Patterson, and Craig, for the purpose of considering the annual report and balance-sheet. The balance-sheet was submitted and caused some discussion, Mr Patterson especially objecting to the item of £105 paid to Messrs Davies and Byrne, for expenses for deputation to Wellington on their last visit during the last sitting of "Parliament. He thought that some details Bhould be given as to how the money was spent. Mr Byrne defended the charges, saying that so far from making money his ex- j pense9 were £100 more then he received. It was impossible to attend a sitting of Parliament without great expense. The Chairman defended the payment, which he thought very reasonable. Mr Williams also during the discussion agreed with the Chairman, saying that no Council in the Colony was worked as cheaply as that Council. Mr Byrne again explained the action he and Mr Davies had taken, and denied that the amount was excessive, as they had to remain in Wellington three months. A warm debate took place on the matter, but Mr Patterson expressed his dissent to an item of that amount being passed without details being given of how the money was expended. Eventually, on the motion of Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr Craig, the balance-sheet as presented was approved of, Mr Patterson repeating his objection and protesting againßt it. Thifl concluded the business of the special meeting, ard we are compelled, owing to the. pressure of late telegrams, to hold over the report of the ordinary meeting until next issue.
