HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
"Weplingtok, August 29. In the House yesterday, after some unimportant measures had been disposed of, the motion of Mr. W. W. Johnston that the House resolved into a Committee of the whole, in order to consider the f ollowing proposals : — "1.) That it is not ex•pedient that an attempt should be made ffor the present to establish a direct steam Pjfoßtal service between England and New Zealand, as the large subsidy which would nepessarily be required, would more than counterbalance the advantages. (2 ) That the 43an Francisco mail service now in operation should be extended for 2 or 3 "years 1 ,- 1f the cost of extension 1 does not exceed the present cost to the .Colony. (3.) That it i 3 of importance that there should be a monthly passenger and mercantile steam service, established between England -and New Zealand by suitable steam vessels. (4.) That the length of the voyage each way should not exceed 50 days. (5.) That any contract should not be for more than three years. ((».) That the cost of such service to the Colony should not exceed £40,000 per annum. (7.) That the Government are hereby authorised to take the necessary measures to give effect to these resolutions." Mr Johnston mentioned that the cost of establishing the service referred to in proposal ' o. 1 would be something like £160,000 per annum. Proposal iS o. 1 was then agreed to, and the other proposals, after long discussion, were passed with slight amendments. The House then adjourned.
