Wellington, September 5. Mr Hutchison has tabled the following notice of motion for Thursday ; — " (1.) That in the opinion of this House, the Customs duties upon tea and coffee are impolitic and unjust, as pressing unduly on the masses of the - people, jjj^i& tbjg\£>g a charge tin many cases amounting to 100 percent' upon those commodities, the consumption of which should be encouraged' as tendering to the promotion of sober and economic hab'ts. (2). It is, therefore, desirable that those duties should be repealed, and this House recommend the Government to make arrangements, for so doingf in the next session of Parliament. (3.) That a land tax on a progressive scale be substituted; therefore, 'this tax to be levied on all lands alienated from the ! State, and held in case of agricultural land in any quantity over 200 acres, and in the case of pastoral land in any quantity over 2000 acres. A question asked by Sir John Hall in the House to-day, elicited tin information of the probable cost of the printing the papers ordered in connection with the Brogdons' case would be about LSOO. Mr Dick stated that this sum would be plased on the supplementary Estimates. In the House yesterday the follow- . ing Bills were passed through coinmiti tee : — Road Boards Bill, Counties Act Amendment Bill and Road and Bridges Construction Bill. The first of these Bills occupied the attention of the Committee up till the supper adjournment. Numerous verbal and other amendments of a comparatively unimportant character were effected in the measure. \ In reply to Mr Bracken Mr Dick j said the Government bad no intention of introducing a bill to amend the Gaming and Lotteries Act this session.
