LYELL MINING

(Times).

Fiuday, September 29.

The prevailing bad weather is having its effect upon mining matters, and everything is decidedly dull. At New Creok, the outside works in hand are at a complete standstill, and there seems no present prospect of a change. About ton day's fine weather would see everything ready for a start. Within the mine there is no change to report. — At the EightMile, the little battery of the United Italy Company is merrily hammering away, and is reducing a very satisfactory quantity of quartz weekly. A ppearances warrant the belief that the return will be something handsome.— On the Alpine range the Captain Cook, No. 2 Alpine, and South British Companies are all busily engaged prospecting their properties, but there is no discovery of importance to mention. — The United Alpine Company seem to be very unfortunate of late ; numerous mishaps during the last month or two have delayed crushing operations. Last week it was mentioned that a slip had damaged the head-race. Repairs were scarcely effected when a large body of the lull came away early in the week, doing damage to such an extent that fully a week must elapse before the slip can be cleiired, and the race repaired, At the mine there is no change to report. — The contractors in the Lyell Creek Extended low level are pushing ahead their contract but they report the driving to be voiy hard. — At the Croesus Company's No, 2 level there is no change to report in the nature of the country which is being driven through, and the rock continues, in the words of the miners, "as hard as bell metal." — The Time Will Tell Company, whose lease is to the westway and adjoining the United Alpine Company, are about commencing operations. It is most likely that a tunnel will bo driven to intersect the reef exposed at the United Alpine filling-in shaft, near the Time Will Tell boundary. — At Lower New Creek, the Victor Emanuel Company are prosecuting the opening up their mine, extension of the low level upon the reef being the principal work in hand. The surveyor's report has been laid before the directors. I shall refer to it more fully next week. It is very favourable.
