REEFTON RAILWAY LEAGUE.
The weekly meeting of the members of the Executive was held at the Council Chambers, on Friday evening last. Mr Hindmarsh in the absence of the County Chairman, was voted to the chair.
There were present : — Messrs Oxley, Wise, Gardner, Potts, Beeche, Connolly, Shepherd, and Collings.
The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the secretary read a number of letters and telegrams forwarded by him, in accordance with the resolutions passed at the last meeting of the League.
The following replies thereto had been received and were read.
From T. S. Weston Esq. M. H. R., detailing the steps that had been taken in Railway matters in Christchurch, and promising to heartily co-operate with the
League.
From the Mayor of Christchurch, suggesting that the Parliamentary Representatives of the towns directly interested in the construction of the railway, should be
induced to bring pressure to bum on the Government to undertake the work. From Mr G. Thornton, expressing the opinion that the Government would not, make the line, and advisiug the formation of a private company to undertake the survey, and send one of the promoters to England to expand the scheme. From E. Wickes to the same effect aud stating that London capitalists had agreed to take the project in hand. From the Chairman of the Railway League, Nelson, inviting the co-operation of the Reefton League in urging the Government to abandou the East Coast line, and adopt the West Coast route for railway purposes, and suggesting the advisability of active steps being taken, to promote the object in view. On the motion of Mr Beeche, the correspondence as read was received.
A discussion then ensued upon the correspondence.
Mr Wise moved. That in the opinion of the Reefton Railway League, a survey of the proposed line to connect the E. and \V. Coast is indispensable, in order to furnish the HoyaJ Commission with reliable evidence on the matter, seconded Mr Gardner, and carried. Mr Potts moved, that the secretary communicate with the Chamber of Commerce and Mayor, Christchurch, Mayor of Sydenhatn, Chairman Nelson Main Trunk Railway Committee, County Councils Waimea, and Amberly, and all other bodies having an interest in the mover inent, asking them to contribute towards the expense of a preliminary survey of the proposed railway route, so as to supply the Royal Commission with reliable data. Seconded by Mr Beeche and carried. Moved by Mr Gardner, and seconded by Mr Wise, that Mr J. Auld be appointed Collector of Subscriptions promised in aid of the movement, and that a list of subscribers names be published, carried. Mr Potts moved, that with a view to further the movement, it is desirable that statistical information of all the imports should be collected, to supplement evidence to be given before the Commission, o obtain which, he should recommend the appointment of a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Oxley, Hindmarsh, Sheppard, Wise, Brennan, and the mover, seconded by Mr W. Campbell, and carried Moved by M r Wise, that a deputation from this body consisting of, Messrs Gardner, Wise, and Boeche, wait upon the County Council, and urge upon them the necessity of completing the Maruia track, to the county boundary, to fiicilitato the objects of the Railway movement, seconded by Mr Sheppard, and carried. The- meeting adjourned.
