During the stay here of Messrs Bryce and Rollestoii they were successful in settling the long standing dispute between Harding and the Natives at Waipawa. The Government buy five acres of land from Harding and give it to the Natives, who remove all dwellings at present outside the new boundary within four months. The arrangement is satisfactory to the Natives, and practically what Harding o^red years ago. Both Ministers proceed to Wellington to-day by steamer. A deputation of Wairoa settlers waiting upon Mr Rolleston this morning urged the construction of the Wairoa road. The Minister promised that the work should be proceeded with without delay. Westpout, 6, The Charles Edwai'd on going down the river this evening met with a slight accident. The steamer's paddlewheel came into collision with the stone protective works which ruii out into the river. She immediately returned to the wharf, and it was then found that the only damage she had sustained was the smashing of the paddle-wheel. The boat canted considerably and the mishap greatly frightened the passengers, of whom there were many on board, including several ladies who screamed in great fright. The steamer will be detained until to-morrow. Auckland, 6. The City Council after discussion | of a petition of 1160 married women, 1 praying for a vote of ratepayers on the ! projiosed enforcement of the Contagij ous Diseases Act, passed a resolution on the motion of the Mayor unanimously declining to grant the request, on the ground that a public vote would be of little or no value, and that the .•> ct would exercise a beneficial influence on the morals of the district.
Timaru, 6. At the Chamber of Commerce today the question of forming a Refrigerating Company in Timaru was discussed and warmly supported. An influential sub-committee was appointed to take the initiator) 7 measures. It is proposed to try to buy the N.Z. Meat Preserving Company's works at Washdyke, about twenty miles from town, which would suit admirably, as they are well situated and supplied with water, and are of a very extensive character.
