John Alexander Doric has commenced an anti-liquor crusade in Collingwood. A band of men assembled outside the bars of the public houses and denounced the dealers, exhorting them to prayers, and inviting them to throw their liquor into the gutter. The question of the security of documents in the Tellers Office has been mooted since the Sydney fire, and it is is intended to protect the windows by tire proof shutters. On Sunday a boat containing five persons capsized on the Yarra, owing to the occupants skylarking and changing places, Magaret Bourke, and George Woods, were drowned, Woods tried to save the girl but both sank. The Reverend Charles Strong has just returned from Europe, and preached on Sunday to a crowded congregation. The remains of Francis Herman have been exhumed at Ararat, it being supposed that he has been murdeied. Robort Smith was arrested on Monday morning for the Avenal Bank robbery. A gentleman was seized from behind and thrown down. Fortunately assistance came up, and the assailants fled and have not been captured. The police intend taking action against those getting up large sweeps, but not until the Cup is over. De Maringo, Italian Consul, has received a letter from Menotti Garibaldi thanking the people of N.S.W. for their sympathy with the family at his father's death.
