LYELL MINING
(Times.)
Frid >y, October 27.
There has been no stir in mining matters during the past week. — Much better progress has been made with the driving in the Croesus No. 2 level during the past fon tight than for some time past, the nature of the county having taken a decided turn for the better, he distance driven from the cross-cut to to-day is 313 feet, making the total length of the level 536 feet. — The United Alpine Company's
mine is now tolerably busy, the battery is kept going with satisfactory regularity. A good supply of quartz is going forward.— At the Eight-mile \ the United taly company's crushing ! is drawing to a close, and a general cleaning up will take place to-morrow. The yield will probably be made known in the evening.— The Maruria Company, which has just been registered, and the legal managment of which is located in Dunedin, intend pushing on operations vigorously, and steps will be taken to open up the mine and take out a crushing without delay, this company is already inviting applications for the situation of battery manager. The crushing plant at present is badly out of repair, and no doubt the appointment of a competent person to place it in working order is a very judicious step on the part of the directors. — At New Creek the United Victory company's battery is working capitally, and an average of o\ er SO tons per week will now be reduced, as the new head-race was completed yestarday, and full supply of water is now available. A little better than 200 tons of quartz have been reduced to date, and appearance of the plates shows cont nued improvement. Within the mine tho usual works are going ahead, there being the regular show of stone in the various faces. — The Republic and Ballarat Companies are expected to complete the survey of the Victory line of reef next week, after which steps will be taken to drive levels to intersect the lode. — From the Victor Emanuel Company's mine the usual progress is reported, upon the lode in the low level, the reef continuing of good average width, and carrying about the usual show of gold. — The contractor for extension of the Cosmopolitan tunnel is making satisfactory progress, and the point at which it is expected to intersect the reef should be approached in five or six weeks.
