NEWS BY THE MAIL.

w , NEW SHIP CANAL IN GERMANY. The project of a great ship canal run--1 ning from Kiel to the mouth of the Elbe has been more than once broached within i the past few years, but has hitherto come to nothing. The German Government appears, however, at length disposed to take up the matter in ' earnest. Field Marshall Count Moltke, the chief of the Grand General Staff, has now been requested by the Emperor , to subject ..he project to a searching examination, and to stake the result of this investigation in a special report to the Government Tbe great strategist is of course, more especially te enquire into the military and naval ! .importance of the canal, as well as to estimate the cost of its construction. Its commercial value in brining the Baltic parts of Germany , Russia, Sweden, and Denmark nearer to the coasts of Western Europe and the rest of the world is too obvious to require i particular demonstration. A commission will be shortly appointed to assist Count Moltke in his task, It is to consist of officers connected with the Grand General Staff, as well as with the Admiralty and Minister of War.
