BED QUEEN.
Since opening out the mine, a distance of 30 feet has been driven, and the reef has been found to be widening out as the work advances, and what is more, showing still better gold. All the stone got is of very good quality, and there are now some seven tons in the paddock, in nearly every piece of which gold is visible. While on the ground, Messrs Eay and Easmusseu tried a portion of the reef 1000 feet above the present low level workings, and crushed half a pound weight with the rude appliances at command. The result was most satisfactory, a prospect of 8£ grains being obtained. We may fairly assume that this was a picked piece,. though whether that is so or not, we cannot say. In an case, it must be very satisfactory to shareholders. The reef at this altitude is about 16 inches in width. It is intended by the directors to come to terms, if possible, with the proprietors of the old Mokihinui battery, and if the negotiations now pending are satisfactorily concluded, the Red Queen will have a crushing within three months.
