At the Supreme Court to-day, the arson case against George Fraser, contractor, for Catlin's river railway, was taken. He was charged with burning down a store on the works, which the Public Works' Department had given notice he must quite, After a- lengthened hearing, the jury brought in a verdict of " Not Guilty," adding that the insurance dompanies were greatly to blame for taking risks without inspecting the premises The Presbyterian Synod spent six hours last' night over the Deceased Wife Sister question, and they eventually decided to adopt the decision of the Presbytery, namely, to let the question stand exactly as it is. Considerable disappointment was experienced yesterday in consequence of the non-arrival until a late hour of the Union Cq'B.. s. Wakatipu with 'Sir W. Jei^ois on^B^^bT.^TCrbwds of people wearing an expectant air flocked to the Queen's Wharf during the day, but owing to the steamer not putting in all appearance were doomed to depart without catching a glimpse. Just as everybody had ceased to expect the steamer, viz,, at half-past ten, a reporth as heard fVoin Mount Victoria, and the wharf which about that time presented a somewhat deserted appearance, began to grow lively again - The Wakatipu reached the wharf about an hour afterwards. The Naval Brigade cutter had put off from the breastwork to convey the Premier on board before coming alongside. Eventually it was decided that the formal reception would take place at 2 o'clock to-day, aud on this being announced the crowd dispersed. The formal landing of the new Governor, Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, C,8., G.C.M.G-, took plT?ce at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The affair was attended with the utmost success, the demonstration on the part of the citizens being enthusiastic to a degree. His Excellency was welcomed by the Mayor, Councillors, and a large number of leading citizens. Ou arrival at Government House, Sir Wm. Jervois was duly sworn in as Governor of New Zealand, the oath being administered by His Honor the Justice.
