(FIIOM OUK OWN COItRESPONDENT. ) CnnisTcnußCii 14. A meeting of Mr ,J. Oram Shepphard's creditors was ' held yesterday, at which the liabilities were stated to be £40,000, and the assets £50,500. Of the liabilities £40,000 are secured by £50,000, the estimated value of the assets. Messrs Stead and Royse and A. C. Wilson wore appointed a committee to investigate the position of the estate ou behalf of the creditors. Auckland, 14. When Mr Bryce arrived at the Thames a crowd who assembled to hoot him were nicely sold. The resolutions of most general interest passed during the session were as follows : — A motion by Mr Andrews, seconded by the Rev. J. P. Kempthorne, and carried, unanimously : That in order to strengthen the hands of the clergy in refusing to marry a deceased wife's sister to her brother-in-law, the General Synod bo requested to re-affirm that such marriages are expressly forbidden by the law of the Churches of England, in accordance with tho teaching of the Holy Scripture. It was also agreed that the General Synod bo respectfully requested to petition ,bofch Houses of the Legislature lo adopt some measure, whereby the Holy Scriptures m^y be in fcro-f duccd into the State Schools withoui
