Te Wetere Wiwine (Wahanui's). brother, Ngahauru, Te Haere, (who was assaulted when with Hurst^ houses party) and other Ngatimaniapoto chiefs, had an interview with the Governor accompanied with the Hon. Mrßryce. The chiefs welcomed the Governor. In the Supreme Court to-day anew trial wa.s applied for in the libel case of Lewis v. The Southland Times, on the grounds that the verdict given for defendant was not unanimous, and the affidavits of 8 jurymen were filed in support of the application. His Honor, Judge Williams, refused the application with costs, on the ground that the jurors acqu.iesed in the verdict when given by the foreman in Court in the usual way, and he said it would be a dangerous thing to allow individual jurors to dissent after a verdict had been so given. = Hokitika, 6. At the Supreme Court, the jury in the case against Ferguson and Dunlop, for cattle stealing, returned a verdict of "Not Guilty," at half-past twelve this morning. The charge against Jas. Wylde, of embezzling £2 10s. was heard, and a verdict of " Not Guilty," was returned. To-morrow other charges against him will be proceeded with. 7In the Supreme Court,Hokitika,this morning, Jas. Wylde was aciuitted of 1
the charges brought against him yesterday. The Crown has withdrawn all the other cases. In the first case, a sentence of twelve months imprisonment has been passed. Christchuuch 6. The Selwyn election resulted as follows : — Lee, 258 ; Eichardson, 220 J M'Lachlan, 140. The official declaration of the poll will take place on Monday, at noon. At the criminal session to-day, Mahuki, and 22 followers, were found guilty of assaulting and wounding a native named Te Haere, of Hursthouse's party. Mahuki completely ignored the whole of the proceedings. The jury returned a verdict of guilty against .Mahuki and his followers, for assault on Reuben, a storekeeper, and acquitted them on the charge of riot in Alexandra. The other charges were withdrawn by the Crown Prosecutor. Mahuki and Titi Hamilton were sentenced to twelve month's /with hard labor, Pukitehe:,^nd^|^B|e^a^^iie>: montn's, and all the rest six month's. Mahuki said the sentence was just, but that God and Te Whiti had the power to save him. Wellington, 7. Some attention is now being paid to the Terawhiti reefs. Gorden, Inspector, visited the mines yesterday. A rumor has been current here for two days past, that Mr E. Shaw has decided to withdraw from the contest for Inangahua. Hislop and Peck were each fined £100, for being in possession of stilling apparatus at Palmerston, yesterday.
