« (per reuter'k agknoy. ) Eeceived, May 2, 9.40 p.m. London, 2. In the House of Commons last night precedence was voted to the Affirmation in Lieu of Oaths Bill, upon the motion of Mr Gladstone. The customary Whitsuntide, review commences on Friday llth inst., and Parliament will reassemble on the 31st. James Fitzharris, the cab-driver, who has been identified as having been employed by the Phoenix Park murderers, will be tried for conspiracy to murder Lord F. Cavendish and Mr Bourke. The trial of|Edward M'Cafferty, of the alleged four active assassins, commences at Dublin to-day. ■ Sydney, 2. Parliament was prorogued by His Excellency the Gevernor to-day. In the course of his speech Lord Loftus staged that the revenue of the colony was very satisfactory, and fully realised the Treasurer's estimate. Melbourne 2. At a meeting of the Victorian Racing Club to-day, it was decided to add 1000 soys.to the Melbourne Cup 1500 soys. added 1 money, and that the winner of. the Victorian Derby must carry 71b penalty for the Melbourne Cup. It -was also resolved to withdraw the Champion Stakes from the programme of New Year's Day meeting, and to substitute in its place two races to be called the " Bagot Stakes" and the "Standish Plate," the winner of the latter to receive 500sovs. The race for the Champion Stakes is hereinafter to be run at the Autumn Meeting in March, the added
money being as at present 1000 for first horse, and 100 for second. Received, May 3, 1 p.m. London 2. Tenders for the Tasmanian half-mil-lion loan were opened to-day, and were found to amount to the exact sum required. The average of the tenders is £98 10s., being 10s. above the fixed minimum. Patrick Delaney and Thomas Cafferty, two of the Phoenix Park prisoners, have confessed to their complicity in the murder of Lord Cavendish and Mr. Bourke, and have been sentenced to death. Cairo, 2. Lord Dufferin has started from this oity for Constantinople, his mission to , Egypt hoving been completed. Melbourne, 2. There is much discussion regarding j the Sunday question. A monster meeting was held at the Town Hall to-night in favor of I opening the Library on Sundays, as well as the picture ga lery and museum. An Opposition meeting will be held on Monday. The state of James Francis' healthis now reported to be very precarious.
