(from our own correspondent. ) Christchurch 2. King, a colored man, with his wife, the occupants of the restaurant burnt on the 23rd April, have been arrested for arson. Harry Jackson, who was suspected of shooting at Mr John Deans a year ago was arrested on a charge of assaulting another man. Dunedin, 2. Thomas Mark, engine-driver, was oiling his e.ngine at the main station this evening, and while he was on the ground he asked the fireman to move, the engine a little. The fireman seems to have misunderstood his request, for he moved the engine towards Mark, and it crushed him against the coalshed. He was dreadfully injured by the engine, and on being taken to the hospital died within an hour Or two. He leaves a wife and three children. Auckland, May 2. Captain Hammond and the chief officer of the George Beney testify to the wonderful effect of oil on troubled waters. When their vessel was ou the way out from London, running before a terribly fierce gale, it was found that large quantities of water continually broke over the stern, and the cabin was partially flooded. Captain Hammond determined to try the " oil experiment," and accordingly two canvas bags were prepared, and filled with oil. TJieso wore liung over each quarter, and produced a wonderful effect, for subsequently scarcely any water broke on board. Daniel Scalloh, a publican, was convicted for trial for perjury, arising out of a Sunday-trading case. Bail was allowed, himself in £500, and two sureties in £100 each. Wanganui, 2. Mr. Bertram, a passenger by the Huia, from Wellington to Wangauui, fell overboard last night about 8-20, when off Mana Island. He was standing on the bridge, leaning against the rail, when he lost his balance, and fell overboard. It was too rough to lower a boat, but a rope was immediately thrown out, but with no avail. He was a draper at Halcombe. An enquiry will be held to-day.
