The insurances effected prove not to be more than £5000, and this is divided over a number of offices, so that there are no very heavy losses among the companies. The Land Board enquiry Las been adjourned. New Plymouth, 14. The Taranaki Herald's Uranui correspondent writes :— " The Natives from this district are leaving for Parihaka. They say they are coining back, but I notice cavts going that seem to be loaded with . things, as if some of them were going to stay there. Not many have gone yet, but more go tomorrow, so as to be at Parihaka on the 18th. CIIIUSTCIIURCH, 14. The Times this morning says : — " Tiie Collector of Customs has made a seizure of fancy goods at Christchurch and Lyfctelton. This actiou has been taken in consequence of an apparently fraudulent invoice being ten clered to the" Customs authorities." Auckland, 15. John Graipal and Chas. Brown were arrested on suspicion of being
concerned in the jewellery robbery. ; Both are well-known to the police, and are ostensibly hawkers, j : Kumar a, 14. j Seddon addressed his constituents last night, arid received a vote of con ' fidence. Wellington, 14. Parliament opened to-day. The opening was attended with the usual ceremony. Punctually to the hour His Excellency and suite drove up to the main entrance to the Council Chamber, and was saluted by the Guards, while the artillery fired a salute from the vicinity of the Parliamentary buildings. The Garrison band struck up the National Anthem. There was a comparatively small attendance of members of the other branch of the Legislature, the majority of members preferring to postpone the day of arrival till next week, when the business commences in earnest. At the door of the Chamber His Excellency was received by Sir William Fitzherbert, the Speaker of the Legislative, Council, bj^rhorh he ws£ esjisor^ speech was to be made. As soon as the Governor had assnmed his seat he sent a messenger for the " Commons," I meanwhile gathered together in their i own Chambers, and were anxiously awaiting the summons. Presently these were to be seen filling into the Legislative Council Chambers, headed by the Speaker, Sir M. O'Rourke, who as usual was proceeded by the Ser-geant-at-Arms. bearing the mace. The Premier (Hon. F. Whitaker) then presented the speech to His Excellency, who in clear deliberate tones read it to the assemblage in the Legislative Council. Messrs Brandon and Barnicoat took the oath and their seats. In the House of Representatives Mr E. J. Lee, member for Selwyn, took his seat and oath. Mr Montgdmery gave notice to ask the Colonial Treasurer on what date the Financial Statement would be made. Mr J. M'Kenzie gave notice to ask the Minister for Public Works when the Estimates would be brought down. Sir George Grey gave notice to move that the Land Tax be imposed. Mr Montgomery gave notice to move the repeal of the Property Tax. Mr Hutchison gave notice to ask the Government whether they will at once expend a sum of money in making a passable track to the gold diggings at Terawhiti. Sir George Grey gave notice of his intention to ask for leave to introduce a Bill entitled "An -»ct to Substitute Affirmations in Lieu of Oaths" ; also, for leave to introduce a Bill entitled " An Act* to provide that the General Assembly of New Zealaud shall 'consist of tlie Governor and a House of Representatives ; " also, for leave to introduce a Bill to further secure the rights and privileges of the members °f the House of Representatives. At 8 o'clock the House adjourned till to-morrow.
