At a conference of the Australian Underwriters held here this afternoon, it was decided to adopt a general tariff for homeward and outward shipping, applicable to the whole of the colony. The conference also resolved to accept the New Zealand Underwriters' tariff for New Zealand ports.

The Argus to-day announces that it has despatched its Fiji special correspondent to New Guinea, and that he left Cooktown yesterday for that Island.
With the exception of South Australia all the Colonies have intimated their willingness to share in the expenses of the annexing of New Hebridies.

The latest telegrams to hand from Madagascar, report that the French commander is content with the position now occupied at Tamatave, and has decided not to advance upon Antananoo, the. capital.
It is announced that Wm. Ouidan has been appointed British Envoy to the Transvaal, to open negotiations for a revision on the Anglo- Boer convention.
Amsterdam, 20.
A serious fire occurred to-day at the dockyard in this city. A dutch warship lying in the dock was totally destroyed, and great damage was done to other property.
Cape Town, 20. The death is announced to-day of Bishop Colinso, of NataU-aged 69. ■ -

The libel case, Anderson v. Proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald, was concluded to-day. The jury returned a verdict forplaintifi"; damages £400.

In the House of Commons last night the Bill for legalising marriage with deceased wife's sister was passed through Committee, and ordered to be read a third time.
The Daily News, in an issue this| morning, confirms a stateniirtt thai Sir Anthony Musgrave, late (lovernor of Jamaica, and not Eichard O'Shangansey, has been appointed to the vacant Governorship of Queensland, and states that Sir Anthony will sail for Australia in a few weeks.
