Nelson, 16

At the Supreme Court, in the case Wright v Tyrrell, the jury, after a deliberation of two and a half hours, found a verdict for the prosecution, and defendant was fined £50.

■ In the Lyell murder case, the jury retired at midnight last night, and after an absence of 45 miuutes, returned with a verdict of manslaughter. The prisoner, in reply to the Judge, said he had been convicted on the oath of a perjured prostitute, and two perjured constables. The Judge sentenced him to penal servitude for life, saying at the same time, that the jury had taken a very merciful view of the case, as the evidence fully justified a verdict of wilful murder. The case has created a lot of excitement, the Court being crowded daring the whole of the trial. Dunedik, 20. George Moran for arson at Kaikoura, was committed for trial to-day. An important step in the liquidation of the Guthrie & Larnach Co., has been completed by the sale of the remaining assets. The price it is understood, is one that will cover all ascertained liabilities, and the expenses of liquidation, and leave a dividend of 5s to the shareholders. The Dunedin Gaol enquiry begins to-morrow, and will be open to the Press. The second perpetual 'easing trial was very successful.
