A trial was made of Potte/s woolsaving machine to-day, in the presence of a number of commercial men and stock-owners from the Southern provinces. The invention has been patented for the New Zealand and Australian Colonies. It is claimed that the wool on leaving the machine, and being dried, is ready for the' English manufactory. Those present were satisfied with the results. The Council offer a premium for the best designs for a Free Public Library, and Art Gallery, Lecture, and Class Rooms for the School of Arts. £200 is offered for tlie best designs, and £100 for the second best. Messrs. Sheehan andF. A. Whitaker leave for Wellington to-morrow by the Manapouri. Hokitika, 11. The layer reported as being struck in the main tunnel of the Eoss United Gold Mining Company still remains in the face, carrying the same rich gold as reported. The mining manager has also started a cioss-diive, with the view of testing the quantity of wash. Eight feet were driven yesterday, and the result obtained was l£ozs. of gold to 2| loads. There seems every prospect of this proving to be an extensive layer, which can be at once worked, as it is above the level of . the Pert tail-race Junnjeh The second engine -for the pumping plant for this company has arrived at Westport, and will be on the ground in a few days. Kumapa, 11. George Michael Gibhardt, aged 52, a wood-cutter, was accidentally killed yesterday afternoon by a tree falling^
upuii him, causing instantaneous death. At the inquest to-day a verdict of accidental death was returned. Deceased leaves a wife and eight children. July 12. The ''"nergy, a three-masteu schooner» from Grey mouth, for Noumea, with a ' cargo of coke, has put in here leaking. The captain reports having left Greymouth, or the 3rd instant The vessel struck heavily on the bar, while drawing nine feet of water, but kept on her course till the 7th instant, when it was found the water was gaining, and the keel was much strained. He then resolved to make for Auckland. Wellington, 12. Miss Rhodes, half-sister natural daughter of the late Hon. W. B. Rhodes, and heiress to the whole of his property, amounting to over a quarter e-f a million in value, was married yesterday to Edward Moorhouse, a brother of the late ex-Super-intendent of Canterbury.
