MINING NEWS.

; , j [From o?r. Jp^&Rj£oiam ] >p ".: : Saturday, July 28. Mining matters lilve tfeen' devoid of incident during t\h w^eky and the share market continues ill a languishing condition. ;/The£ .faj|ure^ pi' t\\e Oriental and LanKey'a^Greek com panics to realise the^ex^etatious i^ dulged in over their^h"slrl^ikh'vnfgs has had a very chilling. effect,, and it must be confessed that for the titnebeing the outlook is none too promising. It must, however, be borne in mind, that the earlier crushings of the Keep-it-Dark Company were .by no means inspiring, and it 'was 'a long time afterwards before its payablfmess was placed beyond doubt. Similarly with Lankey's Cement Company, There is no doubt that an enormous amount of stuff was run through which was worthless, but it was -thought to be as cheap to send it down to the mill as to throw it aside, and the result has proved differently. Had the crushing been confined to cement only, and the stuff picked, there is no doubt that a high Return • could hs,ve been secured. Nothing but an actual trial could, however, have proved that it will not pay to work the cement from a face, and run through all the shipping, and with this knowledge acquired the directors will no doubt take another course. It has been proposed to let the breaking down of the cement on tribute, and as the parties undertaking-ifr would be careful to see that cement only was run down to the machine, the idea is perhaps the best that could be adopted. It will, of course, take a little time to find out the best runs of cement, and this done there is good reason to look for a better result. The Fiery Cross crushing continues, and the weekly scrapings show that. tl^©; stone is of a good average quality. The quantity put through will be about 400 tons, after which a general clearing up will take place. So far as the crushing has yet gone the expectation of a yield of l^ozs. per ton has been borne out. The name of the Welcome Company figures once more in the list of producing, mines, and the returns for the present week are remarkably good. In spite of the depression now current, there seems, on the whole, no reason to take a despondent view of the future. The following are the battery returns for the past week : — Keep-it-Dark. — 6930z5. of ! amalgam from 194 tons of stone. (This return is inclusive of the contents of the stamper-boxes for the month's crushing). Welcome.— sooozs. of amalgam from 90 tons of stone. ! Fijsky Cuoas Extended. — 3500z5, of ! amalgam from 100 tons of stone. Oriental— soozs. of amalgam for the week'r crushing (This return is not given as authentic). j
