LYELL MINING.

(Lyell Times) ■ T - Friday, July 27. There is nothing out of the ordiuary run of affairs to report in mining matters for the ; past week. The Croesus Company's battery is running very satisfactorily, and a fair average quantity of stone is being reduced. No definite idea .v can yet be formed as to the probable result of the crushing, as a very large proportion of the gold is retained in the boxes, they being some nine inches deeper than those of the United Alpine and other batteries, thus reducing considerably the chance of escapement of fine "aid and consequently the plates do & not show so well as might otherwise be expected. Within the mine stoping is being actively prosecuted, as also is extention of No. 2 level on the reef, which maintains its usual thickness in all the faces. -p-The United Alpine Company have for the present suspended work on the small surface block lately discovered, and the hands are now prospecting between Nos. 4 and 5 levels with the view of picking up the continuation of the reef previously wrought in this portion of the mine. At the point where operations are now directed the roef was split by a " horse " of mullock, the stone branching off at an angle to the north-west, which portion was worked with payable results It is considered likely however that the main body of the reof was not followed in tho above workings, and it is now intended to prospect on the lower side of this " horse," ia order to ascertain whether the reef continues iv that direction. At No. 6 level satisfactory prod-ess is being made.— From New Crdek, I learn that the United Victory! No. 2 level is being continued with encouraging results! The face ia of a soft character, and the walls of the reef arc s.iLl to be several feet apart, quartz leaders showing at intervals, and tho maimger is of opinion that a defined body of stone is beinrr approached. AnJ ofler has been made the company to work the block between intermediate and No. 2 levels on tribute, but it is not yet known whether* tho same has been accepted The meeting of shareholders called for last week has boon adjournod for three woeks, to enable a full report upon the condition of the mine to be laid before tJm company. —Good progress is beinomade by the contractors" in the Victor Emanuel Company's mine, a distance of 20 feet having been driven since starting.—there ir, no change to report in regard to the works m hand at the United Italy and Sydney companies mines, but the usual headway is bin nomade. .
