INKERMAN.
The crpss-drive in the low level tunnel is in about 50ft; this was laid off to pass under the perpendicular of the winze sunk from No. 2 level. The cross-cut was laid of by Messrs. Johnston and Watkins, so that the continuation of the line would be almost exactly along the line of reef; by this means all sharp turns are avoided, and the future working of the mine simplified, It is not intended to make the connection to the winze at once, but to drive on the reef, and rise at an angle through the quartz, thereby saving the expense of connecting through blank ground. This rise will ! be used to convey filling material from the surface. The reef is now proved over 400 ft, the wid h being from 25ft to 80ft It is proposed to have an aerial tram way. to connect the . low level tunnel and battery, the distance being about half-a-hiile and a grade, sufficient for 'it to be self acting." In connection . with the, mine there T .is a seam of coal easy of access., [l : j
