He complained of the way the Government treated the Con-troller-General, and dwelt at length on the management of the Government Insurance Department. When the matter was actually under investigation by the Public Accounts Committee the Commissioner entered into a new contract for two and a-half years with Mr Thorne. The Treasurer was aware of a report from the Committee on this outrageous proceeding, which was supported by the Government vote. He advocated the political autonomy of each Island with a central legislature to deal with Colonial subjects only. He did not believe in abolishing the Legislative Couucil. Chiustchurch, in. A lad named Lyuham was killed at Templeton this morning in trying to prevent a horse-bolting. The shaft of the cart struck him behind the ear, and death was almost instantaneous. Joe Strong, the wrestler committed suicide to-day by stabbing his throat with a pocket knife. He was dead when found at the house where he lodged. . -
