At an inquest held to-day on the bodies of two mien, who were killed yesterday by a fall of earth on the Mauwara reclamation works, a verdict of manslaughter was returned against 1 O'Malley, the overseer of the works. He was taken into custody by the police on the Coroner's instructions for ' 'manslaughter, but was released on bail, himself in £200,, and two sureties of . £100 each. Mr. J. Saunders and Mr J. M. Shanahan entered into the necessary bonds on his behalf. Auckland, 31. 5 Michael Saunders, of the Thames, > left by the Waihora for Sydney, as a ( delegate for the Auckland and Thames 3 branches of the Irish National League at the Melbourne Convention. New Plymouth, 1. A man named Andrew Smith, said l to be a brother of Mrs John Williamson, whose husband was formerly Su perintendent of Auckland, was brought ' by train from Hawera to the hospital. He was taken there in a cat, and while the usual formal questions were being asked him. preparatory to his being put into a ward, his head fell, ' and he expired. When arriving at the hospital he showed no signs that his death would be so sudden. Brown had been editing the P Southern >tar, Hohart, and though the '. above is the ostensible charge, it is believed the case is one of elopement with a young lady. Brown has been remanded for a week to await the arrival of a warrant from Tasmania. Wanganui, 31. The trial of the action — M'Gregor v. r Boyd began to-day iu the Mipreme i Court, before the Chief Justice, without a jury. Plautiffs are half brother and the husband of an adopted daughter of . the late John M'Gregor, who resided . forty years in Wanganui, and the defendant a Miss Christina Boyd, anothei . adopted daughter ot his, who li ed with i him for the last few years of his life, and up to the ime of his death. Piautift seeks to s»t aside two deeds of gift made in Miss Boyd's favor I y deceased, on the ground of her undue influence, and deceased's unsoundness of mind. A large number of witnesses will i;e called on each side, and the case excites the deepest interest here, the property at stake being worth £20,000, the whole of which passed by the deeds of gift. The trial will pronably last for the remainder of this week. Christchukch, 1. The award made as to the £200 reward offered by Mr Denes for the conviction of Jackson, who shot at him, is as follows: — £50 to Fraser, who gave the first information of Jackson's whereabouts, and assisted in the arrest, £33 4s 1 Id, to Detective Neil, and £"25 each to two others.
