*_ (from our own correspondent. ) Dunemn, 12. A public meeting in celebration of the fourth century of Luther was held last night in Knox Church. There was a crowded attendance. the Mayor was in the chaii', and addresses were delivered by six or eight gentleiien, including Bishop Neville and the Rev. Dr Stuart. ; Chhistchurch, 12. : The collections 011 Charity Sunday WM f e about £400, or £50 more than last year. Invercarqill, 12. The Luther Quadri-centennry festival, held here to-night was largely attended. The programme consisted of addresses on Luther by the Protestant clergy of the town, and music by the combined Church choirs. A boy named Dixou was brought up at the Court to-day charged with rape on a girl of six years. The charge broke down, the prisoner's mother giving evidence that the boy was under fourteen. The circumstances exhibit fearful depravity on the part of some one. It is probable the boy will be charged with indecent assault. Te Aroha, 12. The battery returns for to-day's clearing up are as follows : — Premier, 85; New Find, 122; Colonist, 69; Waitaki, 8; Werahiko, 52 ounces amalgam. Auckland, 12. A fire broke out in Mr A. T. Nathan's warehouse, Queen-street wharf, at 9 o'clock tonight, and the damage done by fire and water will j amount to £7000. v elson, 12. Court to-day. \iter evidence the R.M. expressed his ntention of committing, whereupon lefendants counsel asked for an adjournment to allow to ask the prosecutor to accept a free and ample apology, which.. he. was instructed Mabin proposed to make. Mr Fell, for the prosecutor made no objection, but said the apology must be of the amplest discription, andjab^sol u tely unqualified . Oh the Court resuming r Fell read a most complete apology, and offered no objection to the withdrawal. The R.M. said he felt some difficulty in allowing; the withdrawal^ but.he would be sorry to stand in the way of the undoubted lenicncj shown' by the prosecutor. He then discharged defendant. The Premier left bythe^Rotorua last evening on his way to Sydney, via Melbourne. Mr E. Fox, Secretary to the Cabinet, accompanied Major Atkinson, They will change steamers at Port Chalmers, proceeding thence to Melbonrne by the Wairarapa, now in dock there, and from Melbourne to Sydney by rail. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advices by cable that their new steamship Tongariro, which feft Plymouth ou the 29th ult , arrived at Teneriffe at noon on the 3rd instant, thus making the run in four and a-half days, and beating the Jonic's famous run by twelve hours and a-half. This is splendid work, and speaks well for the capabilities of the new steamer.
