The best offer was £9,100, but the reserve was £9,500. It is stated that the four principal Oarnaru breeders — the Hon. M. Holmes, Messrs Jobn Reid, E. Menlove, and the New Zealand Company, have mutually agreed not to show any stock at Christchurch for at least 3 years. v; 1 • The annual meeting of the Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company was held to-day, at which the report and balance-sheet w<d adopted. Mr Luke, Wesleyan, died of consumption. The news of the suicide of the Rev. Mr ShurrifSj &% Wellington, received >here, ,'hiis ocjeasipned widespread grief, as he was most highly respected. "It was hoped his affliction would be only temporary, and in ordei to support his family in the meantime a subscription was smarted, pv§r .£3OC raised up to the present date. At the inquest to-day on Shnrrifs a verdict of " temporary insanity " was returned. Considerable excitement is beginning to be felt over the Mayoralty election. The candidates are Hutchison, M.H.R, and George Fisher, Hansard reporter. Both men have held the chair several times. Captain Rose, local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Qoinpany, has received ai telegram giving the following information about the Company's direct steamers: — The British King, which left Plymouth for Wellington, on the sth November, arrived at Teneriffe on the 10th iust. The Tongariro, which left Plymouth for Otago and Canterbury, at midnight on the 20th October, arrived on the 20th inst. v She reports " all well." Lyttklton, 24. The Takapuna's maiden trip from Wellington to Lyttelton was an excellent one under the circumstances, though somewhat disappointing as to the actual time made.
