RED QUEEN MINE, MOKIHINL
„ « (From the WestpGrt Times.) Mr FvasmusSen, Miue Manager, had heard of our coining, and had kindly prepared the mine for inspection. Two tunnels and a winze so far comprise the workings in this miue. At the mouth of the upper tunnel the quartz to grass is stacked, and some first-class specimens were selected from the heap. The upper level tunnel is driven 180 feet, and the lower level 172 feet. A winze to connect the two levels is down 48ft. There are thus 122 feet of backs. The winze carried the goldbearing reef, (now lft. Sin in width) down the whole way, when at 48ft, the Manager was compelled to cease sinking, owing to the water. He then continued driving the lower level to drain the winze, and to pick up the reef — in both of which aims he was successful, the reef having been struck ' on Friday evening last, but three inches from where Mr Rasmussen estimated that he would find it. The size oi the reef has materially increased as she goes down, having made from 10 inches, the size at the top of the winze, to 15 inches at the bottom, or, in other words has increased 5 inches iv 47 feet. The distance to drive th« lower, tunnel to reach beneath the winze is 9-3 feet, and distance to rise will be about 67 feet. When this work it completed the mine will be thoroughly opened up, and in a position to put out stone in large quantities — in this opinion every one of the party versed in mining readily agreed. The Directors have under consideration the idea of connecting their paddock with the battery on the opposite side of the nver by means of an aerial wire way, such as now muse over thrice the distance at the Globe Mine, near Reefton, and the situation, is an excellent one for carrying the proposition into effect. As indicated above, the Rod Queen Company have contributed £442 10s towards, the cost of repairing the MokiInnui battery ; this sum they will take out in crushing at the rate of 10s per ton, and have the right of crushing an additional 1000 tons at the same prioe. The great worth of this Company's property is now a certainty, the finding of the gold-bearing reef at the lower level proving the ground to a still further extent, and the Company are going the right way to work to develop the riches in their hands.
