The steamship Kent outward bound, from London to Melbourne, was found on arrival at Port Said to bp on fire in the hold. The fire was extinguished soon after discovered. Some slight damage was done to the cargo. New V rk, 12. Arrived — ship Parnell, from Auckland, August 27. s Melbourne, 18. Lord Eoseberry arrived here to-day from Sydney. Sydney, 13. The Land Bill was brought up for discuswon in the Legislative Assembly last evening and met with persistent stone-walling from the Opposition benches. A destructive hurricane of unprecedented violence passed over England to-day, several persons were killed, others seriously injured, and a large amount of property destroyed along the path of the storm. Latest intelligence to hand from Soudan is to the effect that an immense body of Arabs, which El Mahdi recently had under his command has greatly decrease, and that large numbers of his adherents are dispersing. Information has been received from Canton, that the fortifications sur rounding that city have been put in complete readiness to withstand an attack if an outbreak of war, should occur and that strong bodies of troops are posted in the neighborhood of the city. His force will be composed of Egyptian gendarmes, negro troops and a contingent of Bedouin Arabs. London, 18. A meeting of persons interested in the late International fisheries exhibition, was held at Cannon-street hotel last night. Much dissatisfaction was expressed at the awards of the International juries, and it was resolved that a deputation should wait upon the Government to protest against the same. Sydney, 7. The debate on the Land Bill was continued in the Legislative Assembly until an early hour this morning, when the motion for the second reading of the bill was carried on a division, by 76 vo es to 16. In the course of his speech Foster said he was rejoiced to hear of the proposed Federation of the Australasian Colonies, and trusted Lord Derby would bo able to accede to the request of the Australian Convention for the annexation of New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. Paris, 14. Intelligence is to hand from Tonquin reporting that the King of Anam has been poisoned, and that his death has been caused by a conspiracy among the Anti-French party in Anam. A question has been raised here regarding the validity of the appointment of Heid to a seat in the Executive Council, to which he was appointed in January last, with the portfolio of Public Instruction. It is affirmed that Reid's seat in the Legislative a ssembly is jeopardized by virtue of the Constitution Act, under which no provision is made for the appointment in question. Later intelligence from- Soudan states that disunion has occurred among the. tribes who were leagued . together under El Mahdi> and that they are now returning to their former isolated condition, Paris, 14. General Millot has received orders to proceed to Tonquin, in command of two brigades comprising 8,000 men. The forces in Tosiquin will by this reinforcement be raised to a strength of 15,000 men. Madrid, 14. Prince Frederick William, German Crown Prince, arrived to-day at Barcelona, en route for Italy. Hong Kong, 15. A report has reached here that the usurper of the throne of Anam, who caused the late king to be poisoned, has refused to recognise the treaty which his predecessor made with the French Commissioner, M. Harnaud, and will declare war against the French.
