REEFTON JOCKEY CLUB.

♦ Third Day. .} g . •-. s For an "off day" the gathering on the g racecourse on Saturday last was surpris- I ingly large, numbering somewhere about S 700. The morning. broke sullenly enough, but towards noon the clouds lifted, and, as the day wore on, anxiety as to the weather was removed, and, under the in- it fluence of a scorching, sunshine, all evidences of the heavy rain of the pre- * ceding twenty-four hours quickly disap- • £ peared The course was a little sloppy j ! for the first race, but did not interfere j materially with he running, and for the r rest of the day the turf was iv grand ; £ order Very few ladies graced the occa- t sion with their presence, the "congrega- r tion " being made up chiefly of the most s enthusiastic " sports " of the sterner pro- i l fession, who were apparently well sup- * plied wich the sinews of war, and anxious * to do business in the way of backing their j v opinions. Sweepmaking was thoroughly J epidemic, from the nimble half-crown, up l to the sportive sow, while the totalisat'jr was fairly besieged over every event, so great being the rush to invest that many ' were "crowded out." The "under and!, over" tables were silent, and the syndicate : , of "banker's sons," with pockets burst- I | ing with money, were prevented by a ! ( tyrannical police from allowing the public , to win it. It was nearly 8 o'clock when the last race wa3 run. Tho fallowing is the result of the running : • 1. PONY HANDlCAP.— Distance, 1£ miles. Ll2 ; second horse to receive L 2 from the stakes. Mr Beeches Madame Patti, Bst 51b - 1 Mr Oochrane's Sawdust, Bst 121 - - 2j • Mudge, 7si 71b, Rora, 7st 121 b, and i • Nell, Bst 121 b, also ran. This was a very j good race, Sawdust bung just jockeyed out of n'rst place on the post. ' There was LBO in the totalisator on this ; event, the dividend being L 3 83. on i Madame Patti. 2. HACK HANDICAP. -LlO. Mile heats. Mr < ahill's Misfortune, 9st 41b - - 1 Mr McQuillan's Redan, Bst - 2 Mr Cochrane's Sawdust - • - 3 i This proved an easy victory for isfortune • There was LSB in the totalisator, of - which L4O was on Misfortune, the divi- ! dend being Ll6s. j 3. COUNTY HA' DICAP. 1,25. Dis- ' tance, l£ miles. Second horse to re--1 ceive L 5 from the stakes. ! Mr Williams' Parnell. list - - 1 ' r Reilly's Barney, 9st 61b - - 2 , Mr Richardson's Norfolk Lass. 7st 71b 3 Albion, list, did not accept. Parnell, in spite of the pack load placed upon him, ; won cleverly. i There was L 279 in the totalisator, of : which . 102 was on the winner, the divi- : - dend being L 2 9s. 4. PONY RACK— 1J miles. First, LlO ; 1 . second, L 2. (For horses under 14£ hands.) " ■ 1 Mr Connolly's Billy, 7st 71b - - 1 i »ir Cochrane's "awdust, 7st 121 b - 2 1 Mr Beecbe's Patti, 9st 61b - - 3 1 Dolly, Bst, also ran, but Billy, a thundering old "hair-trunk" (to look at), who was never dreamt of as a winner by the knowing ones, amazed everybody by waltzing in several lengths ahead of the : field. I In totalisator Ll2O, the dividend on ■ the winner ruing L 4 13s. j 5. TROTTING RACE HANDICAP.— ! LlO. Distance, 3 miles. { V r Campbell's Jack, 275 yds - - 1 ■ Mr Craig's Dolly, 100 yds - - -2 1I Dr Thorpe's Ada, scratch - - - 3 A large sum of money in private bets was * dropped on this event, Ada being the pub- ; l lie's favorite at -even moneyagainst the field. ; , Passing the stand the first time Jack j stumbled and ' roke, thus losing a deal of ground, and giving Dolly a lead of several i lengths. Jack, however, recovered the j lead after going about half-a-tnile, but j Ada up to this time had not materially 1 gained ground. Half-a-mile from home the latter was, however, let out, when she pulled up considerably, but it was too late, and Jack won by fully fifty yards, Dolly being twenty yards behind for second place. There was a good dea l of soreness on the part of the public over the result of this race, and opinions were ■ expressed rather freely On the preced- ( ing day Dolly received the same start • from <da, and the latter overhauled the , former before half the distance had been covered, whereas in this race Ada hardly recovered a yard from Dolly until turning 1 the last corner, when she picked up rapidly, but too late to affect the result. There was L 144 in the totalisator on this event, the dividend on the winner being LI 12s. 6. CONSOLATIO . — 1. 10. Distance, ! li miles. '- Mr Jones' Nell, 7st 71b - '- - 1 N r Cochrane's Sawdust, Bst 61b- - 2; .V r Beeches Patti, 9st - - - 3 Nell won with the greatest ease by several lengths. The amount in the totalisator was L 65, the dividend on the winner being L 2 13s.
