A gold bearing reef was discovered to-day at the 640 ft. level of the deep level cross-cut mine, the greatest depth to which an unmistakeable auriferous lode has been traced in the district, and the discovery is regarded as one of the greatest impoitanee, Invercargill,, 27. News from Central Otago received to-day states, last night was a fearful night of wind and rain, the Alolyneux rose 12ft. to-day at Alexandra South. Christchurch, 27. At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce held to-day, the President congratulated the members on the improved condition of mercantile affairs in the district, and commented on the foreign meat trade, the prices of grain, railway charges, and the new Bankruptcy Act. Wanganui, 2S. Sir Eobert Douglass, Bart, died early this morning from cancer, at Mr Ashforth's residence, where he has been on a visit for several weeks past. The deceased gentleman came to the Colony as captain in the 59th regiment, and sat in the last Parliament as member for Marsden. Wellington, 28. Dr Hector has been subpoenaed as a witness in a case of murder on the West Coast, and after attending the sitting of the Seriate of the New Zealand University, which opens at Nelson to-morrow, he will proceed to Hokitika, and give evidence at the Supreme Court, relative to certain marks of blood found on the clothes worn by the prisoner.
