The Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria have purchased the premises of Mr Aiken, draper,' having 33ft frontage to Queen-str^t, for .£16,000.

The officers of Tsujnba were entertained at Kawau, by Sir Goorge Grey. Among the amusements provided were deer stalking and wallabi shooting.

He wil! not incur a shilling of expense in his election, but will gratuitously educate the people who do not understand the franchise, and if a better man shows up he will gladly resign in his favor. v Dun r din. 23. At a well attended- meeting held today, it was decided to form an Early History Society for Otago and Southland ouly< A motion: to call it the New Zealand Historical Society was lost.

Mr Thomas Bracken, M.H.R. for Dunedin Central,' addressed a meeting of his constituents' last night. The hall was crowded,, and tjie Mayor was in the chair. Mr Bracken dealt principally with decentralisation, strongly favoring it. Mr Mac'andrew and Mr Montgomerie were also oh the platform. He was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.

Wellington, 24. A fashionable wedding was interrupted yesterday by the non-appear-ance of the bridegroom at the appointed hour. His whereabouts has not been yet discovered.

iThe Union Steamship. Company are building three steamers "for the West Coast trade, and one for the. intercolonial trade. This latter will be over 300 feet long, with a carryin" capacity of over 2,000 tons, and a speed will be guaranteed on her trial of 16£ -knots. She is to be fitted up in a style hitherto unequalled by anything which has yet come to the colonies.
