(from our own correspondent. ) HOKITIKA, 28. Patrick Collins has been committed for trial for indecent assault oh Sophia Malvin. Bail was accepted, accused in £100, and two sureties of £50 each. Invercargill, 28. After two days hearing in the District Court before a special jury the case of M'Leod y. The New River Harbor Board was decided in favor of the plantiff, for the second time, . with costs in both trials. The claim was one for £200 damages sustained by the ketch Edith Reid, through alleged irregularities of the bottom of the Harbor at Invercargill jetty. " Christchurch, 28. At about 11 o'clock this morning there was a narrow escape from a collision in the LytteHon tunnel. The passenger train from Christchurch had just entered the tunnel, and the driver noticed that he could not see a light in front, lit? whistled, and put on the brakes and -brought the train to a standstill a few yards from a goods train from Lyttelton.'the driver of the latter heard the whistle and also stopped. At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the president in his address attributed the depression here partly to over -building, saying that a quarter of a million had been expended during the past three years in building new stores, hotels, banks, and factories. The Wellington telegram re Pilliet resigning the seat for Stanmore if Vegel will come forward is understood to be correct, and communications have been opened up with Vogol, but no definite information as to the result can be obtained. A definite reply has not yet been received from Sir Julius Yogel as to whether he will become a candidate for Staumore. The railway authorities deny that there was a narrow escape from an accident in the tunnel yesterday, and assert that the goods train was in a siding at Heathcote waiting for the passenger train to come through. Several passengers by the latter state, that when approaching to the rJeathcote end of the tunnel the. whistle was repeatedly blown, and the train was almost brought to a standstill. On emerging from the tunnel a goods train was seen on the siding at tho mouth of the tunnel, but whether or not the goods train had been in t,he tunnel they could not say. Later information re the LytteHon tunnel rai'iway incident shows that the cause of the passenger train beinff slowed down was that the light near the Heathcote end of the tunnel had gone out, and according to the rule the driver on finding such to be the case at once shut off steam. From the position of the goods tiain a collision could not have occurred. Dunedin, 29. Mr De Latour has not yet intimated any intention of seeking re-election for Mount Ida. Auckland, 29. A Whangarei coal mining company has been formed to work the Whan Whau coal mines. Twenty thousand shares have been taken up, and a railway- line to connect with the present Government line is to be completed in live months. New Plymouth, 29.
