» (from our own correspondent. ) Christchurch, 14. A terrible tragedy occurred about 4 o'clock this morning at Leeston, when a two roomed cottage on the Southbridge road, owned by Mr Holly was destroyed by fire. The cottage was occupied by Mr Frank Smith and his wife and as neither of them were to be found after the fire the debris was examined by constable Simpson> when the charred remains of the unfortunate man and his wife were found. On furthei search being made a third body was found, but at present it is not known who it is. An inquest will be held this afternoon. Ashburton, 13. Sir Julius Vogel addressed the electors of Ashburton at the town hall to-night. He delivered a long address, and after answering a few questions, which were put by Mr Jolly, one of the candidates, Mr W. C. Walker, the Chairman of the County Council, moved, and Mr Charles Reid seconded a vote of confidence, which was carried. Wellington, 14. On Steward's amendment to the Address-in-Reply coming on last night a few of the Opposition spoke, and but two Government supporters and the Minister of Justice, members on both sides holding back their speeches for replies. Mr Wakefield made a brilliant speech, but weakened his position by attacking friend and foe alike. The division gave a majority of nine for the Opposition. Of tbe Coast members Messrs Seddon and Petrie voted for the Opposition and Messrs Shaw and Fitzgerald, for the Government, Mr Munro had not arrived. The House meets to-night when tho Premier will make a statement of tbe intention of the Government. Whatever may be the arrangements, a dissolution is certain to follow within a few weeks. The Address iu Reply was presented to His Excellency yesterday. After this had been done the House was adjourned till Tuesday on the motion of Major Atkinson.
