The Inangahua Times, PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1884.
We understand that the Government have decided not to no-ept any of the tenders sent in for the inland mail services in this part of the Colony, but to call fresh ten der 3 for the whole. This determination on tho part of the postal authorities is not a little surprising to us, for it is no secret that there has been unusual competition for the different services this year, three and four tenders having been sent in for each. So at least we are informed from Wellington, and why then it should have been decided to decline the whole series of tenders, will certainly be puzzling to tenderers and the public. One reason has been suggested, and the action of tlio authorities seoms to give color to it. It is that the Government are anxious to get the session over, and the members out of Wellington, but seeing so many alternative services have been tendered for, and that competition has been exhausted upon each, there is no reasonable excuse for putting the tenders off-, and the public will be to blame if they do not protest against the delay. j . The unfortunate miner Hill, injured some time ago in the Inkerman mine, died in the Hospital yesterday morning. For some weeks his condition has been such as to cause the worst apprehensions. His system seemed to suffer a total collapse. Everything that medical skill and attendance could do for the poor fellow was done without avail. Deceased was very highly respected, and was a man of temperate and exemplary habits. The funeral will take place at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The Public Works Statement was delivered in the House on Friday last, and was wired through in the evening. It is of more than ordinary length comprising upwards of 12,000 words. Elsewhere we publish such portions of the Statement as are of special interest. The Statement is unpretentious, snd contains nothing in the nature of a surprise, and beyond indicating that its author has a grasp of the situation, is generally a very commonplace production. Pressure upon our space compels us to hold over several reports, letters and other local topics. It has been arranged to hold a concert at Boatman's on the 14th November next, in aid of the Church of England building fund there. A number of lady and gentlemen amateurs from Reefton have kindly promised to assist at the concert. The brethren of the Ancient Order of Foresters are requested to assemble in tho Lodge-room at 3.15 p.m., on Tuesday, for the purpose of attending the funeral of the late James Hill. Members are required to attend in mourning regali-i. The funeral will move from the Hospital at 4 p.m. No health with inactive liver and urinary organs. Take Hop Bitters. See.
