INANGAHUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

I , The Council met yesterday at 2.30. p.m., there being present Cf. Menteath (Chairman), and Crs. M'Ginley, Craig, Irviug, Twohill, aud Duncan. The Chairman read. the section of the Act, under which the meeting had had been convened. The Clerk read the annual balancesheet. Cr. Irving said there was one item "Union Cempany £118" continually on the balance sheet, and he would like to know whether there was any chance of recovering the amount. The Chairman said the sum ef £100 had been granted some years ago to the company as a subsidy for road works, but the Company bad since gone into liquidation, and it seemed useless to carry en the item. In reference to the item of " £60 dishonored cheques" the Clerk reported that the amount was paid to within about £23 16s. Cr. Craig said he found tbat cheques had been takon as security by those who were unable. to pay their rates. The Chairman said if the Rate Cotlector accepted cheques . at election times it would be putting a dangerous power into bis hands in the event of his accepting cheques from some and ref using them from others. Gr. M'Ginley said the Collector should be authorised to receive cheques from all or from none. The Chairman said it would be advisable to pass a minute having reference to the auditor's memo. He suggested that the collector should on receipt of a cheque frdm a ratepayer give a conditional receipt only, the receipt proper not to be given until after the cheque was met. He would ask some Councillor to move a resolution on the etihji'Ct. Cr. Craig moved, Cr. Irving seconded, and it wax carried that no receipts be issued on acconut of cheques for j rates until such ohrquc or cheques be paid. '

There being no further discvssion on the balance-sheet. Cr. Twohill moved, Cr. M'Ginley seconded, and it was earned that tbe annual balance-sheet of the County, as read, be adopted. The meeting than adjourned to j Monday next, at 7,30 p.m.
