MOKIHINUI MINING NEWS.
(From thr Westport Timet.) Tlie Mokihinui Company's batteryis still constantly employed in crushing Red Queen stone, and it is generally believed here tbat the final dealing np will show a yield of the metal which has not hitherto been equalled by tliat of auy previous crashing and which will iv due time be folly appreciated by the shareholders. With regard to the mine itself I am am not wrong in saying that it bas never looked better. Mr Rasmnsseo, the manager, has succeeded in opening np sufficient gron id to admit of three shifts of men being employed in getting stone. All the faces which are open are looking well aud especially the make of stone leing going south, which holds good gold and seems to improve the further it is driven on in the direction ofthe solid country. This circumstance, taken in connection with tbe fact of the reef being found, showing coarse gold freely, on a surface ontcrop in the company's lease at an elevation fnlly 650 feet higher than the present workings, points conclusively to the existence of a well defined reef which runs into the mountain to the southward. This This reef not only runs through the whole extent of the Red Queen ground but also throngh the Advance and Southern Light and other leases in that direction. The Southern Light Company, under the management of Mr A. Grant, who is favorably know as an experienced quarts miner, are driving a tunnel to strike the reef at a point abont 100 feet lower than where it was found on the surface of the Advance ckuai some months ago. The manager expects to cut the reef on the underlie, at a distance of abont 40 feet There is a proposal on foot for the amalgamation of these two lease* Speaking from my owm knowledge of the position of thease claims and the fact of the reef being already fonnd in the Advance I have no hesitaiton in saying that the acquisition of this claim by the Southern Light Company would j greately add to tbe value of their pr perty, not on account of the greater depth of hacks whicii con d lie obtained in the mine, but also for the feeility whick would affoided for smding tkm si*.* to the better/.
In the direction of Rough ami Tumble a start has been made by the Hornbook Company to ptomect for the stone which Boniface discovered in the Nile ground last winter. The road which is being made up this creek is making fair progess under the hands of the contractors. The Specimen Creek track is also well uiid-w way, so that by the end of the summer we will have several miles of additional country opened up for prospecting.
