The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1885.

Mr Menteath returned to Reefton on Monday last. While in Wellington he had an interview with the Minister of Public Works in reference to the Lefthand Branch bridge, urgiug the importance of having the work put in hand at once, so that the main portion of it could be completed while the weather was favorable. A promise was made that tenders for the work would be called at the earliest practicable date. With reference to the question of hospital subsidy, the allocation of the vote would be made as soon as the machinery of the new Act was in working order. Mr Menteath also brought under the notice of the Premier the matter of telephone communication between Nelsou Creek and Ahaurn, and obtained a promise that the line would be erected at once.

Mr J. Ring, who has done much to popularise West Coast scenery, not only by his tasteful choice of views, but also by the excellence of his work, is once more in Reefton, and has opened a studio next to Forsyth and Masters. The weather is now exceptionally favorable for portraiture, and the opportunity should be embraced.

The election of Chairman of the Innn - gahua County Council will take place at the meeting of the Council to-day, and the ordinary monthly moating for the transaction of general business will be held to-morrow.

Lieut. Spence, drill instructor in the Volunteer forceon the West Coast , reached Reefton on Monday afternoon, and in the evening held a parade of the Inangahua Rifles in the drill shed. The Company mustered in full force, and the arms and accoutrements having been examined, the men were put through platoon exercise, after which they were marched to Bridge street and went through a number of field evolutions, the whole of which wer» executed with creditable stcadine** and precision. Lieutenant Spence left for Westport yesterday morning, ami will henceforth make regular visits to Ruefton and hold drills of instruction.

On Friday evening next, 27th instant, Mr A. S. Menteath, M.H.R., will bo prosenetd with a gold watch, subscribed for by his political supporters. The presentation will be a public one, and those of Mr MenteAth's friends and political supporters who can make it convenient to attend are invited to do so. The presentation will be made at Campbell's Southern Cross Hotel, at 9 p.m.

All members are requested to attend on this occasion, as thero will be no drill to-mor-row eveningThe leader of the unfortunate New Guinean expedition was Captain Everill, whose acquaintance with the Malay language, acquired during a long residence in Sumatra, led to his selection for the post ; Dr Bernajs. a well-knowu botanist,

vaa surgeon ; and Dr Haacke, of AdeiliJe, was naturalist. It appears than an opinion is gaining j ground in Melbourne, and is in fact now jonimonly accepted, that the Barrier i silver-field is on the point of collapse - I that its mines are a myth, and the idea that they carry payable silver ore in quantity a deception and a snare. No doubt this is a direct result of the recent collapse of the sho'ldy silver mining project* foisted upon the speculative public in other parts of the colony. It is but the natural fruit of destroyed confidence, and (as we predicted a fortnight ago would be the case) the Barrier will suffer for the frauds that have been perpetrated elsewhere. But the genuineness of a large number, of the Barrier mines cannot be for long disputed, and we may, after the first shock <>f the p-nic is passed, hope to see confidence iv their stability reinstated more firmly than it has ever yet been. In connection with the feeling of disquietude referred to as existing in the Victorian capital we are pleased to learn that the Melbourne Argu* has sent out Mr Nash to inspect and report on the field. We believe Mr Nash is the same gentleman who prepared elaborate diagrams and reports for the Argus on the leadhg Victorian goldmines, and he purposes making similar plans of the lodes and workings here - that is, if he is not led upon inspection to regard the miues as of no more valiie than they are thought to be by the panicstricken outside public. As with most strangers, the size and istabiliiy of Silverton have astonished Mr Nash, but he will be less surprised at the outlay incurred in substantial town improvements when he has been through some of the uuderground workings.— Silver ge. A person signing himself " Enquirer," who wrote to a Southland paper the other day, asking wlia* had become of the proceeds of a local concert, "put his foot in it." One of the Committee answered him as follows :— " Mr 'Enquirer' wants to know what became of the money that was collected at the Fairfax concert and dance. He is evidently surprised at uot seeing a substantial balance handed over to the hospital by the treasurer of that glorious entertainment ; and I am not surprised that he is surprised, for I was surprised myself when I discovered that j the Indies and gentleman who flocked to Fairfax on that immortal night had fasted for at least a week, and were so ravenous that they devoured about 9cwt of cake, 101 bof candles, 20 loaves, and 2 hams (which, by the way, were of enormous dimenshMP^JT lump of beef, 8 or 101 bof butter, a'^i'tv »'»d sundry other articles too numerous to mention, au<? while this unprecedented performance was going on they also guzzle^ the. WU knows how much tea, and swallow-. \ a'.>o:it half the number of cups n.rA saucers that Mr Foster had kindly provi .! . .1. However, I am informed on good authority that the stomach of Mr 'Enpirer' was more ravenous than the rest, and that spongecakes and sandwichos were soen rolling down hia gullet iv tha same manner that he may have observed a famished dog annihilating the carcass of a dead cow, and, I am sure that if he weighs th? subject impartially in his mind, he will be convinced that, he carried fully the value of hia contribution in his skin when he quitted Fairfax in the morning. I think I have now thrown enough light on the sulguct for my friond to examine it without a telescope ; at all events, I have thrown as much as geniu3 is capable of

throwiug."
